International students who are in F-1 status are subject to the health insurance requirement as a condition of their F-1 status. Students with F-1 and other non-immigrant visas who are maintaining legal status in the U.S. are eligible to enroll in insurance through the marketplace. However, non-immigrant students are not eligible for Medicaid unless they have been in the U.S. for five years. Per F-1 student regulations, comparable policies must cover the full period of enrollment and must cover a minimum of U.S. $50,000 for accident or illness, and at least U.S. $7,500 for repatriation, and U.S. $10,000 for medical evacuation. International students are encouraged to contact Admissions at [email protected] prior to choosing another health insurance plan in order to make sure that the plan meets these requirements.
