About child life internships

Please note that we cannot guarantee placement in an approved child life internship since the decisions for acceptance into the internships are the purview of the child life clinical programs. We will support you in securing an internship with mentoring and coaching. However, if you are unable to secure an approved internship in either the fall or spring semester, you will need to secure a child life internship during the summer term after the completion of your coursework. If you do not secure an internship after three attempts, you will need to graduate from Erikson Institute with a Master’s degree in Child Development but without a child life concentration. You may continue to seek a child life internship on your own after graduation but as an independent applicant not affiliated with Erikson Institute.

Successful completion of coursework and a 600-hour child life internship will allow you to sit for the child life specialist examination administered by the (ACLP).

国产偷拍视频Current Chicago area child life clinical internship sites include:

  • Advocate Children’s Hospital – Oak Lawn and Park Ridge
  • Alexian Brothers Women and Children’s Hospital
  • Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital (two semesters)
  • Comer Children’s Hospital (two semesters)
  • Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital Cadence Health
  • Rockford Memorial Hospital
  • Rush University Medical Center

However, we are currently opening up the internship process to national clinical sites. You may apply for an internship outside of the Chicago area hospitals and join the weekly clinical seminar through Skype in the internship year. Please see the list of accredited hospital sites across the nation on the ACLP website.

We typically admit eight students to the Child Life concentration each year: four students to the two-year program and four to the three-year program. We announce the exact number of spots available for each admission cycle at the time that you schedule your interview for admission to the program.

国产偷拍视频In rare cases, we may admit selected applicants to the Generalist M.S. in Child Development program with approval to take the child life concentration courses. This does not constitute admission to the Child Life concentration, and students admitted under these provisions cannot pursue a child life internship to meet their program internship requirement. Instead, we will work with students in this track to help them be prepared and competitive in applying for a child life internship after completing their Erikson degree.

Alternatively, some child life program applicants have chosen to enroll in the MSW program and have worked with the MSW program faculty to secure an advanced year field placement in a health-care setting. Another subset of applicants have chosen to pursue either the Infancy or Children With Special Needs concentrations within the M.S. in Child Development program.

Because master’s students are enrolled in a concurrent integrative seminar that meets during the entirety of your final year in the program, child life internships have to be secured at clinical sites located close enough to our campus that students are able to attend the weekly seminars.

We will support you in applying for and securing a child life internship as an affiliated student in the summer after you finish your coursework. In the event that you are not able to secure and complete a child life internship during the summer after the end of your program coursework, you will earn the M.S. in Child Development as a generalist student.

Because of the competitive nature and limited number of child life internships, we accept students into the concentration only at the time of original application to Erikson. We are unable to accept transfers into the program after the end of the admission cycle for each year.
